Jo - Hitchhiking in Germany

Hi,

I'm planning a hitchhiking vacation to Berlin in a few weeks/months.
I am wondering how safe it is and how the hospitality is in Germany.
Is it custom to pick up hitchhikers? My German is not very fluent, do people speak French/English?

I hitchhiked once before in France and was plesantly surprised people invited us in their homes, offered us showers, sometimes food or even to stay...

It is strange... also in Germany a lot of neo nazi's are quite active, but as it is not a hot item at this moment (is now all about Christians agains the Muslims) a cartoonist in NL and DK have more effect.

The signal? We life in a free country where you can express yourself the way you want and that freedom is one of the most important things in our society. So be strong and don't let anyone...

Currently in some muslim countries there are protests and boycots against Denmark and the Netherlands. It all began with the Cartoons of a Danish cartoonist and a movie by a Dutch politician. Two people that searched for the edge of freedom of speech.
It does effect both Danish and Dutch economies and image abroad. But as Germany lies between both countries, does it have any effect and what...

Most people in Europe visit France, Italy, Switserland, Austria, the Chzech republic or Norway for a wintersports experience. There must be something going on in Germany as well I assume.

Anyone links to sites with more information?
